What you must know

Speed

In urban zones the maximum speed permitted is 60 km/h. In contrast, in highways the speed limit is 100 km/h to 120 km/h. In highways and freeways there are usual speed controls with radars, done by Carabineros de Chile (Chilean Police). Speeding tickets are high.

Fuel

The only type of fuel permitted is unleaded gasoline and has a cost of approximately $1.2 USD per liter. If you want to know the fuel type needed for the vehicle you wish to use, please visit our Models and Fees website section.

Toll

When you exit Santiago, the Carretera Panamericana Highway and other highways alike charge $6 USD toll fee.

Highways and Freeways

Chile offers a roadway network composed of 79.293 kilometers of highways, from which only 15.6% of them are paved. The most important are:

The Pan american Highway (Ruta 5 norte) is a modern 4-track highway that extends along the country from Arica to Puerto Montt and Chiloé Island. This is a paved highway that goes through Chile's main cities offering a fast and safe route with varied services found at different points of the way.

The Austral Road (Ruta 7), extends from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins, with projects to extend it as far as Punta Arenas. It is a very touristic highway but one that does not allow driving at high speeds since some of its sections are made of dirt, stones, asphalt and volcanic ash.

The highlight of "Carretera Austral" are its beautiful Patagonian landscapes of extraordinary beauty, considered one of the most beautiful settings of the world.

Autopista 68, joins Santiago with Viña del Mar and Valparaiso.

It is advisable to search for information about road conditions, since a big part of the secondary routes are not paved and can be made of rubble and dirt.
